Day 2: State House and Events

Today was one of our first full days of activities! We started off by heading to New Hampshire's State Capitol in Concord. This was truly so beautiful, especially in comparison to our state capital (sorry, not sorry). Even on our drive into Concord, we saw people standing outside countless street corners with signs for their candidate.

New Hampshire has a really fascinating legislative body. It is comprised of 400 members- which we were told is the 3rd largest legislative body, behind the United Kingdom's Parliament and the US House of Representatives. The salary for a State Rep is $200. Not a week, not a month....$200 every 2 years, minus taxes of course. So this is really a volunteer government. In addition to this, there is no state income or sales tax, which means that there is little revenue for the government to work with.

In the gift shop, there was countless rows of political stickers and signs on the wall.

The NH State Senate chambers

After our tour, we moved on to the NHGOP headquarters. It was really fascinating to hear a different perspective on the media that we often don't hear on the left. I also thought it was interesting to hear about their social media strategy.

Next, the Bernie team headed off to the campaign rally in Milford. This was a really well-organized event and it was clear to me that the Bernie team definitely knew what they were doing. I got to work in the press box. Seeing just how the press functions in this sort of setting was something I couldn't see anywhere else. We also got to meet Bernie's campaign manager, Faiz Shakir. Such an amazing day and a great experience.
